Many other scenes were filmed close to Woodstock; the scene where the main cast drive past the town sign for Punxsutawney as they enter the town was filmed along Illinois Route 31 at the north end of Algonquin, Illinois. Murray plays Phil Connors, an egocentric Pittsburgh TV weatherman who, during a hated assignment covering the annual Groundhog Day event in Punxsutawney, finds himself repeating the same day over and over again.

On Metacritic, the movie has a score of 72 (Generally favourable reviews) out of 100. Consequently, the love story was less developed in the original script than in the final movie.
He begins to use his by now vast experience of the day to help as many people around town as possible. In February, 2010, the Masters Of None Podcast created the entire morning radio show broadcast that Phil Connors wakes up to every morning in the movie as The Groundhog Day Lost Radio Tapes. It featured the two DJs in studio and a reporter live at Gobbler s Knob, using audio from the film, who then is involved with the chase scene later on.
